Manage namespaces

Namespaces provide a grouping mechanism for collections. Every Astra DB Serverless database has a default namespace, and you can create additional namespaces.

The Data Explorer cannot manage namespaces created outside of the Data API. Use the CQL console to manage these namespaces.

Prerequisites

Create a namespace

To create a namespace:

  1. In the Astra Portal, go to Databases, and then select your database.

  2. Click Data Explorer.

  3. Click the Namespace dropdown menu and select Create Namespace.

  4. In the Create Namespace dialog, enter a name for the new namespace.

  5. Click Create Namespace.

The database enters Maintenance status while it creates the new namespace. Once the database returns to Active status, you can select the new namespace in the Namespace dropdown menu.

You can now create a collection in this namespace.

Delete a namespace

You can delete a namespace that you’re not using. The collections in the namespace and all of their data are permanently deleted.

  1. In the Astra Portal, go to Databases, and then select your database.

  2. Click Data Explorer.

  3. Open the Namespace dropdown menu, and then click delete Trash next to the namespace you want to delete.

  4. In the Delete Namespace dialog, enter the name of the namespace to confirm that you want to delete it.

  5. Click Delete Namespace.

The database briefly enters Maintenance status while it deletes the namespace. Once the database returns to Active status, the namespace, its collections, and all of their data are permanently deleted.
